Sorrento Beach House
Mornington Peninsula
Nestled within the existing native vegetation of an elevated site, this coastal home makes an architectural statement while maintaining the modesty of the streetscape.
Rather than disturb the low-key, single storey character of the charming coastal back street, a recessive lower level was carefully carved into the existing hill on the site. The dramatic entrance slices through the hill below the ground floor, which hovers gently over the surrounding landscape.
In response to the long northern boundary of the site, a rear yard was traded for a sunny side garden, with the living spaces assembled along the length of the building to maximise light and sun in the home. The living space flows seamlessly into the outdoors where a pool and surrounding mature gum trees provide a stunning outdoor area.
A pared back palette of timber cladding and light concrete creates a soft and beachy aesthetic. Pre-greyed off timber was used externally, which will immediately soften the building into the coastal landscape.
