This project for a growing family in inner city Melbourne brought us one of our most rewarding design challenges. The client brief required the existing Victorian terrace on a compact allotment in Fitzroy North to be transformed into a family home. The client’s inherent respect for the neighbourhood and local context inspired us to create a design solution that responds sympathetically to its site and provides the accommodation and functionality required for family life.
A focus on clever use of space was combined with the need to create beautiful rooms that are a joy to inhabit. A new partially submerged double storey addition with asymmetrical gable roof houses a new ground floor living area that opens up to a light filled north facing courtyard. The stair landing accommodates a compact study. Children’s bedrooms feature mezzanine floors tucked into the roof form to provide compact and playful spaces for sleep and play. This project makes the most of its compact site to create an innovative family home.
